Medicinal Uses :

  1. Greater Cardamom is used to treat and prevent throat troubles, congestion of the lungs and pulmonary tuberculosis, and inflammation of the eyelids.

  2. Medicinally, the seeds are credited with stimulant, stomachic, alexipharmic and astringent properties.

  3. It is prescribed for the treatment of indigestion, vomiting, biliousness, abdominal pains and rectal diseases.

  4. A decoction of the seeds is used as gargle in afflictions of the teeth and gums.

  5. With melon seeds, they are used as diuretic in case of gravel of the kidney.

  6. They promote secretion of bile and useful in liver congestion.

  7. The oil from the seeds is aromatic, stimulant, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

  8. It is also reportedly used as an antidote for both snake and scorpion venom.

Medicinal Properties: It has been traditionally used as a mouth freshener, appetizer, digestive and as an antispasmodic. It stimulates the heart and has also as an expectorant. The seeds are also used as constituents of mouthwashes. Decoction helps to control toothache and dental decay. It helps to control nausea, vomiting, thirst, indigestion, loss of appetite and minor itching or irritations of skin.

Greater cardamom like true Cardamom is a plant in the family Zingiberaceae. Its pods are used as a spice, in a manner similar to the green Indian cardamom pods.The seeds are aromatic and pungent with sharp pleasant taste and contain the glycosides, petunidin 3, 5-diglucoside and leucocyanidin-3-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside, and a new aurone glycoside, subulin.
