Medicinal Uses :

  1. Medicinally, it is used as antiseptic. It is very useful in heartburn and stomach disorders.

  2. It is also useful in treating digestive disorders, tuberculosis, respiratory problems, throat problems etc.

  3. Cardamom is particularly helpful for the digestive system. It works as a laxative and soothes colic, wind, dyspepsia and nausea, even nausea caused by pregnancy.

  4. It reduces the air and water elements, increases appetite and soothes the mucous membrane. It relieves gas and heartburn caused by garlic and onion.

  5. It has a wonderful, stimulating, and tonic effect on mind and body.

  6. Cardamom can relieve bad breath and can help clear up teeth and gum disorders.

  7. Powdered seeds of cardamom are boiled in water with tea. It gives a very pleasing aroma to the tea. This can be used as a remedy in the treatment of depression.

  8. It is also useful in erectile dysfunctions and premature ejaculation. A pinch of powdered cardamom seeds boiled in milk and sweetened with honey every night would yield excellent results.

  9. Cardamom is also very useful herb which helps you to clean the body because this herb has detoxifying properties. This is mainly a warm spice and also very effective for overall health.

  10. Cardamom is broadly used to treat infections in teeth and gums, to prevent and treat throat troubles, congestion of the lungs and pulmonary tuberculosis, inflammation of eyelids and also digestive disorders.

  11. It is also very effective in treating halitosis and also deals with the several types of respiratory allergies. Cardamoms are also very beneficial in curing sore throat.

Cardamom is one of the most popular herbs which are also known as ‘Choti elaichi’ in India. Cardamom medicinal uses range from relieving stomach dyspepsia, increasing appetite, soothing the mucus membranes, relieving gas and heartburn, and eliminating bad breath. Cardamom spice substitutes are easily available in tinctures as volatile oil extracts of black cardamom seeds. These can be used in enhancing the flavor of food dishes, however a very small quantity must be used as it is in a highly concentrated form. The health benefits of cardamom are seen in treating diseases such as gonorrhea, urinary tract disorders, cystitis and nephritis.

In herbal tea made of cardamom and cinnamon extract helps in relieving sore throat, throat disorders and hoarseness during a bout of flu. The essential volatile oil in cardamom is used in many pharmaceutical preparations and is also an important ingredient in perfumes and flavoring liquors and bitters. The pharmacological effects of cardamom seeds or cardamom oil can be used as a form of treatment for inflamed nerves and backaches.  A pinch of cardamom powder also helps in preventing nausea and vomiting, due to the antispasmodic properties of the herb. In a particular medical study cardamom oil was shown to have a possible analgesic effect, and further research revealed its potent anti-inflammatory effect. Cardamom seed oil can also be applied to external swellings especially pain in the joints, as it helps to control the swelling and east of pain.
